Your in...Annie, welcome to the EducationPolicyBlog. Your introductory post is confirmation that we've made the right decision in inviting you to join us. You will, I hope, force us to engage some issues more directly and with less "competitive" dialog in search of real understanding of our current educational situation.

I am intrigued by your claim that "this insidious eugenic and social engineering discourse was advanced on a number of fronts throughout the twentieth century, resulting in a national dialogue about intelligence, ability, and degeneracy that has been largely defined by racialized scientism." This is a very strong claim, is it not? You go on to suggest that the "No Child Left Behind" legistlation and the accountability regime it instituted have their roots in not only racism (this is not a unique or new argument) but also eugenics.

What, if anything, is the difference between "social engineering" or "racialized scientism" and "eugenics." The former phrases seem squarely descriptive of what we are seeing in No Child Left Behind. The latter, however, seem to connote something more: the attempt to shape the genetic inheritance of the nation. Can you say more about what exactly you mean by the adjective "eugenic" and the noun "eugenics"?Craig A.
