Abstract:

Market-based reforms of public schooling systems have become the status quo in American schooling. These reforms have been promoted by an amalgam of politicians, ‘venture’ philanthropists, for-profit companies and parent groups as the proven answer needed to address a failing system. This presentation will discuss how markets are promoted in American schooling, focusing on how different actors within the field of education conceptualize markets and how these conceptions clash through local battles over the future of public schooling.

Bio:

Dan Cohen is a PhD student in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. Prior to coming to UBC, he worked as a social policy planner and researcher for the City of Toronto and as a consultant to other local municipalities. Dan’s current work examines the process of market-making in American schooling.

Best,

Ee-Seul
